Catalan Studies opening lecture: Professor John London In brief Date - 31 October 2024Venue - Lecture Theatre G.03, 50 George SquareSpeaker - Professor John London (Queen Mary University of London)Title - Catalan Culture and the Multilingual Translation of the Image Book your free ticket on Eventbrite About the eventThe department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures is thrilled to announce the opening lecture to launch their new Catalan Studies pathway. The lecture will be given by Professor John London (Queen Mary University of London) and is titled 'Catalan Culture and the Multilingual Translation of the Image'.By taking a painting by Joan Miró as a starting point, this lecture asks a series of related questions about translating a culture. How do you translate a foreign language within a source text? Does the author know best? What do you lose and gain by explanation? For Espriu, it may be necessary to know Hebrew. For Calders, a Mexican context becomes important for a Catalan author. Perhaps the answers are in another painting, by Salvador Dalí. And is it possible to retain in English the Catalan identity of stories so dependent on their language of composition? This event is sponsored by the Institut Ramon Llull.About the speakerJohn London is Professor of Hispanic studies and director of the Centre for Catalan Studies at Queen Mary University of London. He has translated more than twenty plays for performance in Britain and North America.Professor London's books include Reception and Renewal in Modern Spanish Theatre (1997), Contextos de Joan Brossa (2010), and the edited volumes Theatre under the Nazis (2000) and One Hundred Years of Futurism (2017).
