About Us

About Us

Welcome to Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

Spanish was formally added to the University’s curriculum in 1919 and, in over a century since, has developed into one of the best-established subject areas of its kind in the UK.

We teach, supervise masters and doctoral students, and undertake research in:

  • Basque
  • Catalan
  • Latin American studies
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish

We are proud to host the extension of the Cervantes Institute in Edinburgh and to play a key role in the Centre for Caribbean and Latin American Studies at the University.

Our in-house Portuguese Language Centre is one of only four in the UK sponsored by the Instituto Camões.

Take a single honours degree in either Spanish or Portuguese, combine both in a joint degree, or take either with one of a wide range of other subjects.

Explore your own area of interest and expertise in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies in a Masters by Research or PhD programme, or choose an interdisciplinary taught masters programme.

Partnership with the Cervantes Institute

The University of Edinburgh is proud to host the extension of the Cervantes Institute in Edinburgh, exploring cultural links between Spanish-speaking countries and Scotland.

This unique partnership has created a global first by creating a Catedrático Cervantes/Cervantes Chair, held by Alexis Grohmann, Professor of Contemporary Spanish Literature.

The new collaboration means that - for the first time - the Cervantes Institute (which spans four continents and 47 countries) will organise events and activities in Scotland.

The programme will include:

  • teacher training and certification
  • poetry, literature, music, photography and dance
