We are delighted to introduce the fifth issue of our online Creative Writing magazine, Babble.

Crowd-sourced at the launch of the previous issue, the main theme of this issue is ‘movement’. The Chief Student Editors have written “The theme encompasses so much from movements of people to dance, nature and more metaphorical interpretations like moving through life. The topic has become even more relevant in the current situation where our movements are restricted.”

Issue 5 features 21 contributions by 19 students across our European languages: 16 on the theme of ‘movement’; five in the ‘melting pot’ section. A huge well done to all concerned for pulling the issue together remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Replacing the on-campus launch scheduled for the end of March 2020, the virtual launch of Babble Issue 5 features video messages by students Yelena Sheppard (Joint Chief Student Editor for Russian) and Tamzin Elliott (French contributor), as well as readings by a number of other contributors.

About Babble

Babble is a Creative Writing magazine for students in European Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh.

We’re an online magazine, a creative space for you to practise your target language(s) and receive useful feedback and guidance on your work, whether that’s prose, drama, poetry or reviews.

We want to showcase what you’re good at, grow our sense of community, and promote multilingualism.

The first issue of Babble was supported by alumni and friends of the University of Edinburgh through an Innovation Initiative Grant.

Babble is perhaps the finest symbol of our efforts to make DELC a welcoming, collaborative and encouraging community of linguists, whatever language they practise.

Véronique Desnain
Head of the Department of European Languages and Cultures
