We are delighted to introduce the second issue of our online Creative Writing magazine, Babble.

This issue is on the theme of ‘Courage & Resistance' and features the work of 21 student contributors in a range of languages.

Writing in the foreword, Véronique Desnain, Head of the Department of European Languages and Cultures (DELC) says:

"The theme chosen this time is relevant in many ways: it takes courage to express oneself in a foreign language, but also to navigate one’s way in a changing and often difficult world. It takes courage to leave your country for a year to study abroad, yet as some of the texts published here show, our students are willing not only to do this, but also to talk about the difficulties and doubts they might have experienced."

"With a wide range of other topics, as well as film reviews, including Bohemian Rhapsody, itself a tale of courage and resistance in many ways, I hope all our readers will find something in Babble that will resonate with them, that will enthuse them to dare (writing, travelling, resisting when necessary) and give them the courage to do it."

The launch of Issue Two was held on Tuesday 27th November 2018 as part of the DELC Festive Showcase, a series of winter events showcasing the department’s languages and cultures.

Babble is perhaps the finest symbol of our efforts to make DELC a welcoming, collaborative and encouraging community of linguists, whatever language they practise.

About Babble

Babble is a Creative Writing magazine for students in European Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh.

We’re an online magazine, a creative space for you to practise your target language(s) and receive useful feedback and guidance on your work, whether that’s prose, drama, poetry or reviews.

We want to showcase what you’re good at, grow our sense of community, and promote multilingualism.

The first issue of Babble was supported by alumni and friends of the University of Edinburgh through an Innovation Initiative Grant.
