About the event

For women, global data shows at least 2.1 billion girls and women in 67 countries who, at the current pace, will not reach key gender equality goals by 2030 - this involves access to education, security, contraception, political leadership, workplace equality.

Representativeness at educational and governmental levels is also in need of improvement, as less than 30% of researchers in the world are women, and, in 2020 across the world women represented only 24.9% of parliamentarians, 6.6% of heads of state and 6.2% of heads of government.

In addition, 80% of people displaced by climate change are female. Strengthening the role of women in the world is directly acting for more categories of citizens benefiting from diversity, against exclusion.

Countries where Portuguese is spoken are equally battling to combat inequality and bring inclusion to the centre of society. Among these countries, Brazil in its current ultra-conservative political scenario redoubles the social struggle.

Brazilian women still face discrimination and disadvantages in their family, professional and sexual life. In the labour market, they are the majority in the category of domestic workers and in the informal market. In the formal market, they earn about 75% less than men, although they are more qualified for the same functions.

in this talk, we speak to author Nara Vidal about how the literary female voice can act in this context.

This seminar is supported by the Núcleo de Estudos de Gênero PAGU of Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) through the participation coordinator and researcher Karla Bessa as a discussant.

About the Palavreada Series

In line with International Women's Day 2022, this year's theme is "Break the Bias". The campaign advocates for an inclusive and diverse world, with gender equality, free from prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination. The Palavreada Series 2022 brings together women writers from Portuguese-speaking countries to discuss how the literary female voice can act in this context.

With the aim of encouraging reflection on these processes of inclusion and diversity in Lusophone literature, University of Edinburgh (Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies), and Instituto Camões (Portuguese Language Centre) is opening this space for discussion among students, researchers, writers and the community.
