The Spanish Play 2019: Luces de bohemia

Each year, students from Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS) produce, direct and perform a play in Spanish.

This year’s production, ‘Luces de bohemia’, is part of our very first DELC Festival of European Theatre: four fantastic language shows over eight nights at Assembly Roxy.

‘Luces de bohemia’ is the story of Max Estrella; a blind man, an alcoholic, and a poet. When Shakespearean drama meets Spanish truest self, an entirely new universe is created. It is a journey of the two sons of the bohemia, apostles of the working class, taking you through the lustful streets of Madrid.

Ramón del Valle-Inclán’s widely celebrated esperpento embodies a new vision of human experience in this world. It forces us to be aware - to realize that every street is El callejon del gato, that inside of us all there is a Max Estrella.

‘Luces de bohemia’ will be performed in Spanish in the Upstairs Theatre at Assembly Roxy on 29th and 30th March 2019, starting at 7pm each night.

The show lasts 90 minutes and parental guidance is advised for younger audiences (mention of suicide and alcoholism).

Tickets are available online and in person at the venue (£6, concessions £4).
