The Janet S. Christie Bequest and The David Masson Scholarship

These two scholarships are awarded annually to students in the department of English Literature on the basis of their application and performance in the final examinations.

The Janet S Christie Bequest

This scholarship is for a female student within the department who wishes to undertake further academic study in literature or a closely related field after graduation. Preference will be given to candidates who wish to take classes abroad, especially within Europe, at the discretion of the examiners.

The current value is around £7,000.

The David Masson Scholarship

This scholarship is for a female graduate who is about to undertake postgraduate studies in the Arts subject area (preferably in English).

The current value is around £1,400.

Carnegie Undergraduate Vacation Scholarships

The Vacation Scholarship Scheme is intended for Scottish students (see Regulations below) who have shown exceptional merit at the University and who would like to devote their full time during some portion of the long vacation to undertake a programme of independent study or research which will be of direct benefit to them in their academic work.

The awards will be available to undergraduates who will be of at least two years' standing at the end of the current academic year; those graduating in the current year who propose to proceed to research can be considered at the discretion of the trustees.

Prospective applicants for the Carnegie Scholarships must request the support of a member of staff.

Carnegie Undergraduate Vacation Scholarships

Regulations

• Applicants must either: have been born in Scotland, OR have a parent born in Scotland, OR have had at least two years of secondary school education in Scotland. N.B. Simply being a student at Edinburgh University does not count as "secondary school education".
• Applicants must be undergraduates who will be of at least two years' standing at the end of the current academic year, that is 2nd year students (during the summer before they enter 3rd year) and 3rd year undergraduates and 4th year undergraduates who propose to proceed to research at Edinburgh University after graduation.
• Applicants are required to carry out a specific programme of work, and attendance at conferences is excluded. The programme will vary according to Faculty, but it should be such as engages the candidate in full-time personal study or research.
• It is a condition of the award that candidates will make a short report to the Trust when the work has been completed.
• Applicants from all faculties and schools are eligible.
• The Vacation Scholarship awards are not intended to compete with industrial or labour employment.

The amount of the award

In 2009 the amounts payable were as follows:

• Living at home £540 (£90 per week, assuming a scholarship of six weeks duration)
• Living away from home £720 (£120 per week, under the same assumption)
• Living abroad £930 (£155 per week, under the same assumption)

The maximum period of a scholarship is eight weeks; a strong case must be made for claiming this maximum otherwise the award may be reduced to the amount for a six-week period.
