About the speaker

Dr Andrew Orr swapped history for medicine at university, working as a doctor in the army with the Scots Guards and then in general practice in Scotland. His current ongoing work is with the Montrose Heritage Trust, and tells the extraordinary story of Bamse, a courageous and affectionate St Bernard dog that served on board HNoMS/HMS Thorodd, a ship of the Royal Norwegian Navy and Royal Navy that was stationed in Montrose and Dundee during the Second World War.

This has included the book Andrew wrote together with Angus Whitson entitled Sea Dog Bamse: World War II Canine Hero, and the creation of a statue of Bamse in Montrose. His most recent book is 'The Flight of the Vikings: Daring Escapes in Small Boats from Nazi-Occupied Norway, 1940-45'.

Are you interested in studying European Languages and Cultures?

Our interdisciplinary environment brings together specialists in nine European languages, and the many cultures worldwide in which they're spoken, with experts in film, literature, theatre, translation and intermediality. Working with colleagues elsewhere in LLC, and across the wider University, we are able to support research which crosses boundaries between disciplines and/or languages.
