DELC Research Seminar Series: Élise Hugueny-Léger and Élodie Laügt In brief Date - 4 February 2026Venue - Room LG.11, 40 George SquareSpeakers - Dr Élise Hugueny-Léger and Dr Élodie Laügt (University of St Andrews)Title - Manoeuvring (in) Languages: Manœuvres Translingues - a Creative Writing Workshop About the eventThis workshop will explore ways in which translingualism, not only defined as operating across different languages but also in so far as it partakes in the fabric of any given language, has been used by women as a motif and a creative resource in their writings. More specifically, by means of a series of writing prompts, participants will be invited to reflect on their own translingualism in relation to the notion of ‘manoeuvre’/ manœuvre, a term whose various definitions and meanings have traditionally been associated with male dominated activities – from le manœuvre (masc.) on chantiers to la manœuvre (fem.) and ‘manoeuvring’ as in ‘controlling’, ‘operating’, ‘navigating’ or else ‘managing’. We will explore what manoeuvring (in) languages can mean and what strategies translingualism opens up both at individual and collective levels. The event follows an innovative format, blending a research element based off a recent joint article by the speakers and opening up to a creative writing/interactive workshop stemming from techniques used in these texts.About the speakersÉlise Hugueny-Léger and Élodie Laügt have experience in leading creative writing workshops with a range of audiences, including in community-based organisations and at poetry festivals. They have co-taught creative writing in French at the University of St Andrews since 2017, combining their expertise in contemporary literature, especially poetry and life-writing, as well as in the interface between literature and visual arts. Their teaching and research are informed by their own creative writing practices. How to attendThis event is free to attend and open to all.
