DELC Research Seminar Series: Charles Burdett

In brief

Date - 26 March 2025

Venue - Room LG.09, 40 George Square

Speaker - Professor Charles Burdett (School of Advanced Study, University of London)

Title - Uncovering the Afterlife of the Italian Empire

About the event

In a world in which we see mounting nostalgia for fascism and increasing cases of state-sponsored xenophobia, it is more important than ever to develop our understanding of the workings of past authoritarian regimes. We must comprehend how the processes of thought and imagination that they promoted continue to exercise a powerful, though concealed, agency in the present.

Concentrating on the relationship between fascism and expansionism, this seminar by Professor Charles Burdett (School of Advanced Study, University of London) discusses how the study of different media supported by interaction with curators and creative practitioners allows us greater insight into the ongoing legacies of Italian imperialism. Referring to Professor Burdett's current project on the afterlife of the Italian empire, the talk explores the means through which researchers can enhance public engagement in their work and the level of impact that it seeks to achieve.

Are you interested in studying European Languages and Cultures?

Our interdisciplinary environment brings together specialists in nine European languages, and the many cultures worldwide in which they're spoken, with experts in film, literature, theatre, translation and intermediality. Working with colleagues elsewhere in LLC, and across the wider University, we are able to support research which crosses boundaries between disciplines and/or languages.
