About the film

Bizkarsoro is a fictional feature film directed by Josu Martínez.

The village of Bizkarsoro does not exist - yet at the same time, any village in the Basque Country could be Bizkarsoro. The inhabitants of Bizkarsoro are fictional characters - yet at the same time, all people who have been persecuted for living in Basque are from Bizkarsoro.

The film is composed of five fictional stories based on oral testimonies and written texts, that take place between 1914 and 1982. Together they weave a narrative that spans five decades.

Gorka Peñagarikano Goikoetxea, journalist from Argia magazine, describes the film as follows: "Bizkarsoro is a Basque-speaking village which has had little contact with external populations in the past. During World War I, it will have to fight first on the French side, and then in World War II, suffer the Nazi invasion. In the end, it will be forced to give up its identity and its language, Basque.

"Its death is planned, the attack calculated, a culture in danger. But against all odds, it will resist. And even if it dies, it knows it will die leaving evidence for the autopsy."

Are you interested in studying Basque?

Basque is spoken by over a million people worldwide, mainly on both sides of the western Pyrenees in Spain and France. It is a modern language, and is used in a very wide range of social and cultural contexts, styles, and registers.

We offer a Level 8, 20-credit course on the Basque Language for Beginners, available to all students at the University of Edinburgh. It aims to develop good oral, listening, reading, and writing skills in the language, as well as providing some examples of Basque culture and society as contexts for the language.
