About the dance course

This spring, the Basque community in Scotland will hold its first ever course in traditional Basque dance. Guided by two dance instructors from the Basque country, attendees will meet for four workshops, where we will learn several of the most important Basque folk dances. The course will include the chance perform the dances at the biannual Korrika celebrations of Basque language and culture on Saturday 28 March 2026.

Dances will be taught through the medium of English and Basque, and no previous knowledge of Basque dance or culture is required. The workshops are open to people of all ages and dancing ability, whether you study Basque at university or live in Edinburgh and would like to learn some new steps, all are welcome!

The course is free of charge, and light refreshments will be provided, with the sponsorship of the Etxepare Basque Institute.

Are you interested in studying Basque?

Basque is spoken by over a million people worldwide, mainly on both sides of the western Pyrenees in Spain and France. It is a modern language, and is used in a very wide range of social and cultural contexts, styles, and registers.

We offer a Level 8, 20-credit course on the Basque Language for Beginners, available to all students at the University of Edinburgh. It aims to develop good oral, listening, reading, and writing skills in the language, as well as providing some examples of Basque culture and society as contexts for the language.
