About the event

Who does the language we speak belong to? Why is the masculine form considered a neutral form? What is the feminine form of this word? What if I want to speak without having to be gender specific?

If you study a romance language, you have probably already heard or asked yourself some of the above questions. As initiatives to make the romance languages more inclusive emerge and find supporters, so does the resistance to these initiatives.

In this event, French, Italian and Spanish speakers join forces to understand why the debates exist and examine some of the ways those languages have evolved in a bid to represent the diverse world we live in.

Come join us for a workshop that will explore a more inclusive way to speak French, Italian and Spanish!

Please note: this event is designed for and open to students of French, Italian and Spanish at any level, from undergraduate upwards.

How to attend

Are you interested in studying European Languages and Cultures?

Our interdisciplinary environment brings together specialists in nine European languages, and the many cultures worldwide in which they're spoken, with experts in film, literature, theatre, translation and intermediality.

Working with colleagues elsewhere in LLC, and across the wider University, we are able to support research which crosses boundaries between disciplines and languages.
