Haunted Landscapes of German Eastern Europe Conference Join us for a free three day conference focusing on Germany’s real and imagined relationships with the countries to its east and the connection between space and memory in German-language representations of Eastern European space. Central to Germany’s spatial imaginary is its relationship with its Eastern European neighbours and shared histories of cultural exchange, violence and genocide. The title of the conference refers to the overlapping definitions of ‘German Eastern Europe’, meaning both historically existent spaces – former German lands and settlements – and the nature and function of Eastern Europe in German-speaking cultural imaginaries. During our days together, we hope to examine continuities and changes in the German relationship with its imagined East and consider the historical developments, political processes and artistic interventions that have influenced and continue to influence these inter-regional dynamics.
