About the event

We're delighted to welcome Cuban filmmaker Jorge Egusquiza, Cuban artist Gretel Alfonso (Guillén Landrián’s widow), Cuban critic and curator Dean Luis Reyes, and Dr Nikolaus Perneczky for a discussion surrounding film director Nicolás Guillén Landrián's (1938-2003) legacy; and for a panel discussion on the restoration project, the filmmaker’s legacy, and the broader challenges of Afro-diasporic archives.

This event marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Afro-Cuban filmmaker Nicolás Guillén Landrián (1938-2003).

Active at the Cuban National Film Institute (ICAIC) in its first decade, before his tragic censorship, Guillen Landrián was one of only three Afro-Cuban directors found among the Institute's roster. In this short window of time, Guillén Landrián directed over a dozen short documentaries, whose beauty and originality place him among Cuba's most admired and enigmatic directors.

After leaving Cuba for Miami, Florida in 1989, Guillén Landrián filmed his final and only audiovisual work in exile, Inside Downtown (2001). Working alongside Jorge Egusquiza Zorrilla, Inside Downtown is a charming portrait of artists and poets of Guillén Landrián’s generation.

During the same period, Egusquiza Zorrilla filmed The End but not the End (2005), a poignant and arresting documentary, with rare footage of the filmmaker’s final years in exile.

In 2020, joining broader international initiatives to decolonize the archive, the ICAIC approved a Cuban restoration of the complete celluloid works of Guillén Landrián from the 1960s and 1970s, spearheaded by Cuban filmmaker Ernesto Daranas.

In tandem, Inside Downtown and The End but not the End have been restored by the University of Edinburgh College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Impact Fund, supported by Africa in Motion and Havana Glasgow Film Festival in conjunction with the Vulnerable Media Lab, Queen’s University, Canada.

Restoration was done by Anthony Martínez-Cuervo, with the assistance of Rebecca Gordon.
