DELC Seminar Series 2020: Rebecca DeRoo "Multimedia Urban Politics in Agnès Varda's Daguerréotypes." A free seminar by guest speaker Rebecca DeRoo (Rochester Institute of Technology). About the seminar French filmmaker Agnès Varda’s experimental documentary Daguerréotypes (1975) is often viewed as a quaint, cinematic portrait of a Parisian street, the rue Daguerre, where she lived and worked. In contrast, this presentation excavates the film’s previously unacknowledged sources, demonstrating how Varda drew on a range of visual media to create sophisticated political commentary on urban and economic transformations taking place in France in the late 20th century. Watch the semiar on Microsoft Teams on 6 November 4pm About the speaker Rebecca DeRoo in an Associate Professor in the School of Communication at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her teaching and research focus on contemporary art, photography, film, and exhibitions. Her most recent book examines the work of multimedia artist Agnès Varda: Agnès Varda between Film, Photography, and Art (University of California Press, 2018). This book was one of three finalists for the Kraszna-Krausz book award in the field of moving image. Dr. DeRoo’s first book, The Museum Establishment and Contemporary Art (Cambridge: 2006) explains how the protests and social movements of 1968 France triggered a radical reconsideration of artistic practice that has shaped both art and museums up to the present. Her book was awarded the Laurence Wylie Prize in French Cultural Studies. Professor DeRoo co-curated the retrospective, Agnès Varda: (Self-)Portraits, Facts and Fiction at the George Eastman Museum (2016). She co-edited with Homay King a special issue of Camera Obscura, titled Future Varda, forthcoming in May 2021. Are you interested in studying languages at the University of Edinburgh?
