DELC Research Seminar Series: Lilia Miroshnychenko

In brief

Speaker - Lilia Miroshnychenko (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv)

Title - Academia in the wartime

Venue - 50 George Square

About the event

Professor Lilia Miroshnychenko, Head of the Department of Foreign Literature at the Institute of Philology at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, is currently on a visit to the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures as a part of the twinning agreement between Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the University of Edinburgh. At this seminar, Professor Lilia Miroshnychenko will share her experience of working and teaching at Ukraine’s leading university during the ongoing war.

Heavy shelling, ruinous to her alma mater, occurred three times. As a result, many campus buildings and the University Maksymovych library were damaged but not the Taras Shevchenko academic community. The university has never stopped functioning. although there were many challenges such as air alarms and power cuts.

The educational process which was resumed online on 1 April 2022 has since never stopped. Teaching and learning under these adverse conditions is considered by both teachers and students a form of resilience, the educational front in this war. United and motivated more than ever, even if scattered all around the world.
