About the event

This event is a book launch to celebrate the recent publication of the newest monograph in English by Dr Norman Ajari (Lecturer in Francophone Black Studies). 'Darkening Blackness: Race, Gender, Class, and Pessimism in 21st-Century Black Thought' was published by Polity Press at the end of 2023, with an English translation by Matthew B. Smith.

At the launch, Norman will give a talk introducing his book, and two invited discussants, Dr Nicki Frith (French and Francophone Studies) and Professor Tommy J. Curry (Philosophy Lecturer, School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences) will be invited to respond to Norman’s talk and then participate in a chaired discussion. This will be followed by a Q&A and a wine reception.

About the speaker

Before becoming a Lecturer in Francophone Black Studies at the University of Edinburgh, Dr Norman Ajari served as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Villanova University, Philadelphia. He specialises in the history of Francophone and Anglophone Black thought, social and political philosophy, Critical Race Theory and Black male studies.

His first book, 'Dignity or Death: Ethics and politics of race' (Polity, 2022) developed a critique of continental philosophy from the perspective of the Black radical tradition. It is also available in French and Spanish. My second book, 'Noirceur: Race, genre, classe et pessimisme dans la pensée africaine-américaine au XXIe siecle' (Divergences, 2022) reflects on the contemporary resurgence of a long tradition of Black radical pessimism under the guise of contemporary African-American intellectual movements such as Afropessimism and Black Male Studies.

Are you interested in studying European Languages and Cultures?

Our interdisciplinary environment brings together specialists in nine European languages, and the many cultures worldwide in which they're spoken, with experts in film, literature, theatre, translation and intermediality. Working with colleagues elsewhere in LLC, and across the wider University, we are able to support research which crosses boundaries between disciplines and/or languages.
