About the event The Department of European Languages and Cultures is delighted to present the Basque language programme's Opening Lecture to launch the Basque language and culture course at The University of Edinburgh. The lecture will be given by Professor Iraide Ibarretxe-Antuñano (Universidad de Zaragoza) and is titled 'Is Basque really that different from other European languages?' This event is sponsored by the Etxepare Basque Institute. About the speaker Iraide Ibarretxe-Antuñano is Professor of General Linguistics at the University of Zaragoza and Researcher at the Institute for Heritage and Humanities. She is also an elected Fellow of The Academy of Europe in the Linguistics Section. She received her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on the relation between language, cognition and communication from a typological and psycholinguistic perspective. She has published on topics related to semantic typology, ideophones and sound symbolism, and the relationship between metaphor, embodiment, and culture. How to attend This event is free to attend and open to all. Registration is not required - just come along. Are you interested in studying Basque? Basque is spoken by over a million people worldwide, mainly on both sides of the western Pyrenees in Spain and France. It is a modern language, and is used in a very wide range of social and cultural contexts, styles, and registers. We offer a Level 8, 20-credit course on the Basque Language for Beginners, available to all students at the University of Edinburgh. It aims to develop good oral, listening, reading, and writing skills in the language, as well as providing some examples of Basque culture and society as contexts for the language.
