Life at LLC

Find out what life’s really like in our School from the people who’re living it.

The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) is one of the largest in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Edinburgh.

We are proud to call ourselves a diverse, equal and inclusive community of people of all backgrounds, experiences, ages and abilities from all over the world.

Life at LLC brings together undergraduate students in 16 subject areas with taught postgraduate students, students on research degrees, and staff at all career stages.

From seminars to film screenings, theatre performances to wellbeing workshops, peer support schemes to reading groups, our fantastic students are involved in so much within the School and as part of the Edinburgh University Students’ Association. Let them tell you about it in their own words...

Abi (Scandinavian Studies and Spanish), Martha (Scandinavian Studies and Social Policy) and Nicole (Chinese and Spanish), three students in their final year, visit Social Bite, an Edinburgh-based charity dedicated to ending homelessness.

We sit down with Jesús Nares Jaramillo, André Hughes and Maisie Smith, three members of this year's From Arthur’s Seat team, to find out more about their time in Edinburgh and what they've learned by being part of the annual creative writing project.

In this blog post, Spanish MA (Hons) student Anu Abicht tells us about how she discovered a passion for teaching yoga during her Year Abroad in Almería, Spain.

We talk to the final year student about overcoming her fears to win the top prize in the 19th Japanese Speech Contest.

Elisabeth Goemans, a PhD candidate in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, tells us about writing an opinion piece for the newspaper De Standaard, and what happened next.
