MSc by Research programmes

Develop your subject expertise and research skills at masters level. Choose from 14 programmes across literatures, languages and cultures.

A Masters by Research (MScR) programme is ideal if you would like to complete a short piece of independent postgraduate research.

This type of programme is likely to suit you if:

  • you have a clear idea what you would like to write your masters dissertation about, right from the beginning of the programme
  • you would like to be part of a large and supportive postgraduate community, while working independently

An MScR programme is typically completed over one year of full-time study. A two-year, part-time option is available on most programmes - eligibility criteria apply.

On most MScR programmes:

  • you will take courses in research skills and methods
  • you will complete two research assignments, each of 6,000 words
  • you will write a 15,000 word dissertation under the guidance of an experienced and well-published supervisor

In selected subject areas, the research assignments and dissertation may be longer. And, In Scandinavian Studies, there is the option to take a programme in which you complete a single dissertation of 30,000 words, as well as training in research methods.

We’re here to help you shape your research to suit your interests, skills and intended career path. While many of our students go on to take a PhD, others move into careers in sectors where they can apply project management and research skills in different ways.
