Inspired by The Big Score and a recent field trip to Orkney, the archive film is the result of archival research undertaken by the students of the MSc in Film, Exhibition and Curation of the University of Edinburgh. In an era of socio-political fluctuation, the film commemorates Orkney’s cultural history and tradition through this visual and acoustic project.

With a live musical accompaniment by the MSC in Sound Design and the MSc in Composition for Screen students of the University of Edinburgh, this archive film is a reflection of the researchers’ transformative Orcadian experience. Transferred on screen as an immersive visual journey through space and time, it is a visceral collage film that celebrates the harmonic co-existence of tradition and innovation, of rural and urban lifestyle on the island, as seen through its different aspects of local life.

As an experimental project that is testing the boundaries of image and sound, it forms an original live experience that breathes new life into rare archival footage, from Neolithic monuments to daily life on land and sea, to the likes of Kirkwall’s famous Ba’ game, with the footage working as a fresh perspective and powerful celebration of Orcadian culture. Weaving together footage from 1930s onwards found in the National Library of Scotland Moving Image Archive, and including a contemporary film by Mark Jenkins, the Stromness-based film editor, filmmaker and film educator, Sound From the Edge of the World renders the “edge of the world” the centre of the project. It is an experience not to be missed, followed by a discussion with the creators and contributors of the film.
