A Writer in Residence Event: Open Mic

In brief

Date - 13 February 2024

Venue - Project Room 1.06, 50 George Square

Readers - Michael Mullen (winner of the 2022 Edwin Morgan Poetry Award), Michael Pedersen (Writer in Residence), and various students from throughout the University

About the event

This event is a showcase of the creative writing talents on show throughout the University's student population. Featuring both undergraduate and postgraduate students from across the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, this open mic evening of poetry and prose readings will also see Michael Mullen (2022 winner of the Edwin Morgan Poetry Award) join the students in sharing selected pieces of their writing.

The event is also another chance for students to find out more and think about the University's three Writing Prizes, which will be judged by Michael Pedersen. In engaging with fellow writers' work, they can hopefully find both motivation and inspiration to craft and submit a piece to one of the three Prizes.

The students who will be reading are:

  • Leah Levy (Creative Writing MSc)

  • Lexie Angelo (Creative Writing PhD)

  • Kylie Corwin (Intermediality MSc)

  • Elsy Pawelak (Creative Writing MSc)

  • Monica Davies (Creative Writing MSc)

  • Kate Catchpole (Creative Writing MSc)

  • Malika McKenney (English Literature & History MA Hons)

  • Liam-Lucille Wright (Creative Writing MSc)

  • Pablo Lacalle Castillo (English Literature MA Hons)

About the guest reader

Michael Mullen is a queer writer whose work traverses both Scots and Standard English. Their work includes a special focus on spoken word, having headlined an array of spoken word events throughout Scotland, and interrogates the relationship between art, class and identity. They like to experiment with both content and form, taking inspiration from everything from lyrical poetry to humorous modern ballads.

Michael's accolades include receiving the Helen Lamb Dissertation Prize, reaching the semi-finals of the BBC's spoken word talent development scheme, Words First, being the runner-up for the country in the 2022 Scottish National Slam Championship, and winning the 2022 Edwin Morgan Poetry Award for their unpublished collection 'Lay Down with Dogs'.

Are you interested in English Literature at Edinburgh?

We offer a wide range of undergraduate programmes, taught masters, and research degrees, including a Masters by Research and a PhD. As an undergraduate, you will read works of literature written in English from around the world, and encounter a range of ideas about the nature and purpose of literary study.

Our courses explore the relationship between literary texts and the construction of national, international and imperial cultures. Working with colleagues in LLC and across the wider University, we are able to support postgraduate research which crosses boundaries between languages and disciplines.
