About the event

We believe everyone has a story to tell and that stories help us make sense of our world. Join us as we bring together local writers and poets from across Edinburgh to create a collective love letter to the city they call home.

Jane McKie, Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Edinburgh, will be joined by her fellow authors as she reads from their poetry collection 'Spaces Open'. The collection grew out of their visits to West Port Garden and learning about its origins. The Garden was designed by Norah Geddes and became a green oasis amid Edinburgh's Old Town slums.

'Spaces Open' was authored by The 12, a collective of women writers - Tessa Berring, Anne-Laure Coxam, Lynn Davidson, Georgi Gill, Marjorie Lotfi, Jane Goldman, Saskia McCracken, Jane McKie, Theresa Muñoz, Em Strang, Alice Tarkbuck, and JL Williams.

About the reader

Her first collection, 'Morocco Rococo' (Cinnamon Press), was awarded the 2008 Sundial/Scottish Arts Council prize for best first book of 2007.

Her other publications include 'When the Sun Turns Green' (Polygon, 2009), 'Gardens of Bedsteads' (Mariscat, 2011) which was a Poetry Book Society pamphlet choice, 'Kitsune' (2015), 'From the Wonder Book of Would Your Believe It?' Are you interested in English Literature at Edinburgh?

We offer a wide range of undergraduate programmes, taught masters, and research degrees, including a Masters by Research and a PhD. As an undergraduate, you will read works of literature written in English from around the world, and encounter a range of ideas about the nature and purpose of literary study.

Our courses explore the relationship between literary texts and the construction of national, international and imperial cultures. Working with colleagues in LLC and across the wider University, we are able to support postgraduate research which crosses boundaries between languages and disciplines.
