English Literature Research Seminar Series: Sadek Kessous and Paul Crosthwaite In brief Guest Speaker - Sadek Kessous (University of Edinburgh) and Paul Crosthwaite (University of Edinburgh) Title - New Research in Literary-Economic Humanities Chair - Lee Spinks About the speakers Sadek Kessous Sadek Kessous joined the University of Edinburgh in 2020, having previously been both a Teaching Associate and Teaching Fellow at Newcastle University since 2017. He completed his PhD at Newcastle University in 2017 and also holds degrees from the University of Warwick and Oxford Brookes University. His research concentrates on the interface of economics, culture and social organisation, and his most recent research project addresses American literary culture since the neoliberal turn of the mid-1970s. The project map the social imaginations of works by William Gaddis, Evan Dara, Bret Easton Ellis, Jonathan Franzen, Joshua Ferris and Charlie Kaufman. In this, Sadek argues that the forms of these works uniquely register the social contours of economic change in arenas that range from pension funds to protests. Paul Crosthwaite Paul Crosthwaite studied at Newcastle University (BA, MLitt, PhD). He was a Lecturer in English Literature and member of the Centre for Critical and Cultural Theory at Cardiff University for four years before joining Edinburgh in 2011. His publications include 'The Market Logics of Contemporary Fiction' (Cambridge University Press, 2019) and 'Trauma, Postmodernism, and the Aftermath of World War II' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009) as well as articles in American Literary History, Angelaki, Cultural Critique, Cultural Politics, The Journal of Cultural Economy, New Formations, Public Culture, The Review of Contemporary Fiction, Textual Practice, and The Year's Work in Critical and Cultural Theory. He has edited a number of publications, including 'Criticism, Crisis, and Contemporary Narrative: Textual Horizons in an Age of Global Risk' (Routledge, 2011), 'Show Me the Money: The Image of Finance, 1700 to the Present' (Manchester University Press, 2014), and 'The Cambridge Companion to Literature and Economics' (in press).
