About the event

Edition (formerly the Centre for the History of the Book) is a collaborative initiative at the University of Edinburgh supporting new research in all aspects of the history of the book, from traditional forms of bibliography, codicology and textual editing to the latest theoretical and digital innovations.

For the inaugural Edition event, we welcome Professor Emma Smith to Edinburgh from the University of Oxford to give our 2024 Annual Lecture.

Chaired by our colleague Professor James Loxley, the lecture is entitled ‘Following the Money: Book Collecting in the Age of Slavery’.

About the speaker

Emma is Professor of Shakespeare Studies at Hertford College, Oxford. Her research combines a range of approaches to Shakespeare and early modern drama. Much of her recent work has been about the reception of Shakespeare in performance, print, and criticism, and about the scholarly and cultural investments in Shakespearean criticism (including her own).

Emma's current projects include a collaboration with Laurie Maguire on models of artistic collaboration in the early modern period and the modern academy. She is editing Thomas Nashe's 'Summers Last Will and Testament' for the Oxford Nashe edition, and 'Twelfth Night' for Arden 4. She also edits the journal 'Shakespeare Survey' (Cambridge University Press), and her next book is on Elizabethan artistic culture from architecture to music to gardens to fashion: 'The First Elizabethans' will be published by Penguin in 2026.

In April 2023, Emma published an opinion piece in The Guardian noting that "as we reckon with the UK’s colonial past, we need to examine the history behind valuable books – even our beloved Shakespeare".

This event is free to attend, and open to all. Please note, however, that the lecture is sold out. You can still register your interest by adding your name to the waitlist on Eventbrite.
