About the event

Join Robert Softley Gale, the Artistic Director of Birds of Paradise theatre company, in conversation with Judith Drake (PhD candidate in European Theatre) as part of the Guthrie Drama Seminar Series. Robert and Judith will discuss Bird of Paradise's recent work, disability and the arts in Scotland, and the current landscape of theatre practice in Scotland more generally.

About the speakers

Robert Softley Gale is Artistic Director of Birds of Paradise (BOP), one of the UK’s leading disability-led theatre companies. He has a long career as an actor, playwright and disability rights activist, and sits on the board of the National Theatre of Scotland.

Judith Drake is a disabled PhD candidate in European Theatre at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on Scottish disability theatre in the late 20th and 21st century. Alongside her thesis, she has established an archive for Birds of Paradise Theatre Company, and is currently co-editing a book with Dr Hannah Simpson, Robert Softley Gale and Máiri Taylor about the history and practice of the company.

How to attend

This event is free to attend, and open to all. No booking is required, and the seminar will be run on a ‘relaxed performance’ model, so all attendees are free to move about and enter/exit the room as suits them.

The Guthrie Drama Seminar Series is organised by Nicola McCartney (FRSA, University of Edinburgh) and Dr Hannah Simpson (Lecturer in Drama and Performance, University of Edinburgh) and takes the form of seminars, workshops and lectures.

The series aims to bring theatre professionals and lovers together to share their passion for the dramatic arts, with a particular focus on teaching practical skills.
