Gained in Translation: Adapting Literary Texts into Comics

About the seminar

This illustrated lecture will discuss the challenges of adapting literary texts into comics and graphic novels, and will reveal some of the secrets behind Paul Karasik and David Mazzucchelli's City of Glass (2004), a graphic adaptation of Paul Auster's postmodern detective novel of the same name from The New York Trilogy.

About the speaker

Paul Karasik is an internationally recognised cartoonist, editor and educator. He teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design; is a regular cartoonist for the New Yorker; and is a former Associate Editor of Art Spiegelman and Francois Mouly's RAW magazine. He has produced a range of award-winning publications in the field of comics and graphic novels, including a graphic adaptation of Paul Auster's novel City of Glass; The Ride Together: a Memoir of Autism in the Family, co-produced with his sister Judy; and How to Read Nancy, an Eisner-Award-winning study of the language of comics co-written with Mark Newgarden.
