English and Scottish Literature Research Events: Simon Kövesi

About the speaker

Simon Kövesi obtained his undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Glasgow. He then gained a PhD on the Romantic-period poet John Clare from Nottingham Trent University, and taught at Glasgow and the University of Dundee. He started as a Lecturer in Romantic Literature at Oxford Brookes University in 2001, remaining there for 21 years and ending up as a Professor and Head of School there, before returning to the University of Glasgow in July 2022.

Professor Kövesi's research interests focus on the English poet John Clare, and more broadly, working-class writing and culture beyond the Romantic period. He also has ongoing teaching interests in Scottish representations of working-class life.

Mostly through working on Clare, Professor Kövesi has developed an interest in natural history, and in literary and critical responses to ecology and environmental politics, a core concern of his 2017 study of Clare. He is also interested in creative rewritings of, and responses to, the Romantic period. He led an Arts Council England-funded collaborative project called 'The Meeting', in which he worked on Clare with poets, a composer, a producer, poetry workshop participants, a playwright, an actor, and musicians.
