Ghost Notes

In brief

Date - 24 August 2026

Venue - Venue NW

Festival - Edinburgh International Book Festival

About the event

Ghost Notes is the latest instalment in Doug Johnstone’s addictive series following the Skelf women: three generations of funeral-directors-turned-private-investigators. This time, they’re thrown into the murky world of ‘grief tech’, a booming industry that creates digital avatars of the dead.

Hear one of Scotland’s most reliably entertaining authors – now in his 20th year of publishing – reflect on his career so far and chat about writing the death industry with characteristic humour, insight, and heart. This event will be chaired by Mary Paulson-Ellis (Writer in Residence).

How to attend

This event is part of the Edinburgh International Book Festival. It is costed, and tickets are available through the Book Festival website.

Are you interested in English Literature at Edinburgh?

We offer a wide range of undergraduate programmes, taught masters, and research degrees, including a Masters by Research and a PhD. As an undergraduate, you will read works of literature written in English from around the world, and encounter a range of ideas about the nature and purpose of literary study.

Our courses explore the relationship between literary texts and the construction of national, international and imperial cultures. Working with colleagues in LLC and across the wider University, we are able to support postgraduate research which crosses boundaries between languages and disciplines.
