About the speakers

Dr Désha Osborne

Désha's research interests include: Caribbean and African diasporic literature and culture; 18th century Scotland and the Caribbean; and literary history. Reclaiming history through storytelling is at the centre of her current project which explores the legacies of Scotland’s involvement in the settling, managing, soldiering, and enforcement of Empire in the Caribbean. Her first monograph is currently under contract with the Edinburgh University Press titled Scots and their Enslaved Families in the Ceded Islands, 1763-1834. This interdisciplinary study brings together transatlantic literary history with Scottish and Caribbean historical studies.

The title of her talk is The Charaib Argante and ‘Scottish Tancred’: Literary and Historical Imaginaries of the Chatoyer-Leith Duel.

Are you interested in a PhD in English Literature?

We offer two PhDs: one in English Literature; and one in Creative Writing. Our interdisciplinary environment brings together specialists in all periods and genres of literature and literary analysis. Working with colleagues elsewhere in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) and across the wider University of Edinburgh, we are also able to support research which crosses further boundaries between disciplines and/or languages.
