Prof Denis Akhapkin is a Calvert-Smolny Fellow at the Princess Dashkova Russian Centre. He is Associate Professor and Deputy Dean of Academics at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Saint Petersburg State University (Smolny College), where he also directs the First Year Seminar. He has published extensively, in Russian, on the poetry of Joseph Brodsky and on the cognitive poetics and contributed entries, in English, to the Dictionary of Literary Biography.

Prof Akhapkin is working currently in the area of cognitive poetics. He is especially interested in problems of ambiguity and comprehension of bi-stable texts and metaphors as a source of ambiguity.

On 16th of October Prof Denis Akhapkin gave a research seminar at the Dashkova Russian Centre entitled ‘Ambiguity as a rhetorical device in literary and political discourse’.
