Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Ian Humberstone In brief Speaker - Ian Humberstone (University of Edinburgh) Title - The Shetland Sea Language in Contemporary Context Abstract by Ian Humberstone This presentation provides an overview of the use of 'sea names' by Shetland fishers. These are euphemistic terms that enable individuals to avoid mentioning the usual names for certain 'unlucky' items while at sea. The Shetland custom is just one example of a global phenomenon, but it is also unique, owing to the fact that much of its traditional vocabulary derives from Norn - an extinct Scandinavian language spoken in the isles until the eighteenth century. However, recent fieldwork has demonstrated that, where still extant, the practice today has largely moved on from the traditional vocabulary towards new circumlocutions in Scots.
