Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Gordon Ó Riain

In brief

Speaker - Dr Gordon Ó Riain (University of Limerick)

Title - The Power of Words: Poets and Poetry in Early Modern Irish Gaelic Narrative

About the event

This seminar will focus on the portrayal of poets in Early Modern Irish Gaelic narrative literature by examining the tale Tromdhámh Guaire ('Guaire's troublesome guests'), from approximately 1300. In the tale, poets are portrayed in a negative light, and the tale includes a small number of poems of praise and satire, some of which appear incomprehensible to characters in the tale.

The talk will also address questions of the function of poetry and its audience, as portrayed in the tale.
