Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: John Stuart-Murray

In brief

Speaker  - John Stuart-Murray (University of Edinburgh)

Title - Carson a tha Ainmean-Àite Gaidhealach cho beartach? / Why are Gaelic Place-Names so rich?

About the speaker

Born in West Africa, John Stuart-Murray was brought up in Fife and London. A graduate of Sussex University and the University of Manchester, he was latterly Director of Landscape Architecture at the Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh.

His interest in Gaelic developed while exploring the Perthshire Highlands, seeking to understand and interpret Gaelic place-names in terms of landscape character, land use and ecology.

Papers on landforms and colour theory led to books in recent years, Reading the Gaelic Landscape (2014/2019) and Literature of the Gaelic Landscape (2017).

Since his retirement in 2017 to be a full-time author, he has been active in staff development for bodies such as NatureScot (formerly Scottish Natural Heritage) and local councils, and in leading guided walks for voluntary and recreational groups. His focus in the seminar will be on visualising the Gaelic landscape.
