Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Margaret A. Mackay In brief Speaker - Dr Margaret A. Mackay (University of Edinburgh) Title - When Song Was the Key About the seminar In this seminar, Dr Mackay will reflect on the contribution of oral sources, and songs in particular, to a ground-breaking series of linked projects led in the 1970s and early 1980s by the late Eric R Cregeen, scholar of Social Organisation in the School of Scottish Studies. Life on the Island of Tiree in the 18th and 19th centuries was the focus of these studies, in which she was a Research Associate. Emigration to Canada, featuring aspects of culture transfer and adaptation, formed part of this story and a clue in a song provided a vital starting point for her fieldwork in the areas of Tiree settlement across the country. About the speaker Born in Canada, Dr Mackay came to Scotland in 1967 on graduating from the University of Toronto. Following postgraduate study at the University of Edinburgh she was appointed to the staff of the School of Scottish Studies, latterly becoming its Director and Director of its Archives.
