Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Jude Dicken

In brief

Speaker - Jude Dicken, Collections Information Manager at Manx National Heritage

Title - Voices from the Manx Folk Life Survey (Isle of Man): The Third Digital Leg

Please note that this event has been rescheduled from its original date of Friday 25 March 2022.

About the seminar

In 1957, Basil Richardson Stanley Megaw (1913-2002) was appointed first Director of the School of Scottish Studies. Prior to this, he had been Director of the Manx Museum where, active on many fronts, he oversaw the development of the Manx Folk Life Survey.

His predecessor William Cubbon (1865-1955) had been inspired to initiate the collection of aspects of Manx traditional life by the work of the Irish Folklore Commission in recording ‘folk-memory’.

Collecting in Man began in 1938 and though World War Two intervened, in 1948, IFC staff visited to record the remaining speakers of Manx Gaelic and the work continued apace in the 1950s.

The reel-to-reel tapes have now been digitised by National Museums Northern Ireland (part of the 'Unlocking Our Sound Heritage' project led by the British Library) and in March will be online on Manx National Heritage's website.

Researchers will be able to reassess the Manx Folk Life Survey, both its methods and its contents. This audible connection with the island's past will be shared with a selection of sound clips in the seminar.

It will also celebrate the strong connections between Manx National Heritage and the School of Scottish Studies through its staff members Basil Megaw and Eric Cregeen, as well as acknowledging the island's debt to the Irish Folklore Commission and more recently National Museums Northern Ireland.

Find the tapes on the Manx National Heritage website
