Translation Studies Research Seminar Series: Multimodal Translation In brief Speaker - Katherine Heller (University of Edinburgh) Title - Fan Culture and Retranslation: The Sailor Moon Franchise Attend the seminar on Collaborate Learn Abstract By Katherine Heller My research intends to understand how the rise of fan translations and the creation of fan culture influences the strategies of professional translators and publishers. I will explore this topic through comparative analyses of various translations of Takeuchi Naoko's manga series "Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn" and its subsequent anime adaptation. These translations were published between the late 1990s, when manga and anime fandom in the English-speaking world was still in its infancy. Further research will include surveying fans. I aim to show that retranslations of this franchise are attempting to retool the texts for changing target audiences, not simply attempting to recover the source text as presupposed by the retranslation hypothesis. About the speaker Katherine Heller is a first-year PhD student working in the language pair of Japanese-English. She was previously a student on the MSc programme in 2018/19 and her research focused on the influence of fan translation on professional translation in the case of Japanese manga. Her current research further explores the impact that fan communities can have on commercial translation and adaptation strategies. About the seminar series Each semester, we welcome a fantastic range of guest speakers and colleagues to present a seminar on their work in translation. Our seminar series is run collaboratively by staff and postgraduate students, enabling our early career researchers to build networks and experience.
