Translation Studies Research Seminar Series: Queer(ing) Translation In brief Speaker - Professor Brian James Baer (Kent State University) Title - Queer(ing) Translation: Rationales, Theoretical Frames, and Methodological Approaches Attend the seminar on Collaborate Learn Abstract By Brian James Baer This presentation situates the recent interest in queering translation at the intersection of counter-hegemonic approaches to the theory and practice of translation that have emerged both within Translation Studies and in other fields, such as Global Sexuality Studies and Postcolonial Studies. The paper begins by defining key terms from queer theory, then moves on to discuss the rationale behind attempts to queer translation. The second half of the presentation focuses on the theoretical frames and methodological approaches to studying queer translators and translations and to queering translation that have been productively applied until now, and ends by exploring future directions. About the speaker Brian James Baer is Professor of Russian and Translation Studies at Kent State University, where he teaches translation-related courses at the undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral levels. He is founding editor of the journal Translation and Interpreting Studies and co-editor of the Bloomsbury book series Literatures, Cultures, Translation. He is the author of the monographs Other Russias: Homosexuality and the Crisis of Post-Soviet Identity (2009), Translation and the Making of Modern Russian Literature (2016), and Queer Theory and Translation Studies: Language, Politics, Desire (2020), and the editor of several collected volumes including Beyond the Ivory Tower: Re-thinking Translation Pedagogy, with Geoffrey Koby (2003), Contexts, Subtexts, Pretexts: Literary Translation in Eastern Europe and Russia (2011), Russian Writers on Translation. An Anthology, with Natasha Olshanskaya (2013), Researching Translation and Interpreting, with Claudia Angelelli (2015), Queering Translation, Translating the Queer, with Klaus Kaindl (2018), and Translation in Russian Contexts, with Susanna Witt (2018). He is the translator of Juri Lotman’s final monograph The Unpredictable Workings of Culture (2013) and of Andrei Fedorov’s 1953 Introduction to Translation Theory, for which he was awarded the EST Translation Prize in 2014. He is current president of the American Translation and Interpreting Studies Association and a member of the Advisory Board of the Mona Baker Centre for Translation Studies at Shanghai International Studies University and the Nida Centre for Advanced Research in Translation in Rimini, Italy. About the seminar series Each semester, we welcome a fantastic range of guest speakers and colleagues to present a seminar on their work in translation. Our seminar series is run collaboratively by staff and postgraduate students, enabling our early career researchers to build networks and experience.
