Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Christopher Whatley In brief Speaker - Professor Christopher Whatley (University of Dundee) Title - Pabay, Isle of Skye: A Personal Journey into an Island's Past Abstract by Christopher Whatley This talk is based on my book Pabay: An Island Odyssey, published by Birlinn in 2019. The book is a history of what is a small, low-lying island located south of Raasay in the Inner Sound between Skye and Applecross. For many years after 1945 my family lived there. Deceptively cultivable, and a fascinating place for the pioneering geologists of the Victorian era such as Hugh Miller and Archibald Geikie, Pabay has long been inhabited, but making a living there has ever been a struggle with the sea and the other elements. My personal experience of being on the island has informed my approach to its history, and enriched my understanding of its past.
