Niles In brief Speaker - Professor John Niles (University of Wisconsin) Title - Storytelling in Song: A Remarkable Case Study from Recent Scottish Ballad Tradition About the event We're delighted to welcome our next speaker in our seminar series, the acclaimed USA-based folklorist Professor John D. Niles. Now retired, he has taught in several universities in the course of his career and is known internationally for his publications on the theory and practice of oral narrative, such as 'Homo Narrans: The Poetics and Anthropology of Oral LIterature'. Professor Niles has had a long connection with Scotland as a collector and scholar, and has recently launched a website entitled Scottish Voices containing his recordings from fieldwork here over many years. This seminar will focus on Duncan Williamson, a storyteller about whom Professor Niles has just published a welcome book, 'Webspinner: Songs, Stories and Reflections of Duncan Williamson, Scottish Traveller'.
