Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Phil Alexander

In brief

Speaker - Dr Phil Alexander (University of Edinburgh)

Title - Listening in on the Jewish Gorbals

About the seminar

Following his research on contemporary Jewish musical life in Berlin, recently published in his book "Sounding Jewish in Berlin: klezmer music and the contemporary city" (OUP),  Phil’s current research focuses on Scottish-Jewish identity as negotiated through music and sound.

In this seminar, he will invite us to “listen in” to several moments of Scottish-Jewish life in the early twentieth century, a period when the Jewish presence in Scotland was increasing significantly, including in the Gorbals district of Glasgow.

How to register
