About the speaker

Joanna Kopaczyk is a Professor of Scots and English Philology and historical linguist with a special interest in the medieval and early modern history of the Scots language. She uses corpus-driven methods to uncover textual standardisation, and is also interested in formulaicity in language, as revealed through all kinds of repetitive patterns.

Some of Joanna's other interests include exploring legal texts composed in medieval Scottish burghs, historical phonology and sound changes, and the early modern period of the history of Scots. She aims to develop a systematic approach for tracing the demise of Scots under pressure from English in the official registers, and is planning to look more closely at these two standardising languages in competition.

Joining a seminar is free, and everyone is welcome. No booking is required.

All seminars take place online fortnightly on Fridays from 13.00 to 14.00.  Please contact Dr Neill Martin to be added to the mailing list for an invitation, link and passcode.
