Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Christopher Whatley In brief Date - 6 October 2023 Venue - Online Speaker - Professor Emeritus Christopher Whatley, (Scottish History, University of Dundee) Title - 'Pabay, Isle of Skye: A Personal Journey into an Island's Past' Email Neill Martin for joining details About the speaker Professor Christopher Whatley is an Emeritus Professor of Scottish History at the University of Dundee where until recently he was also a Vice Principal and Head of the College of Arts and Social Sciences. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His main specialism is Scotland's economic, social and political history from the seventeenth century onwards. His work includes writings on industry, work, labour organisation and popular protest, Robert Burns, the Union of 1707, its causes and its aftermath, and the history of everyday life in Scotland. Some of his notable publications are 'Scottish Society 1707-1830: Beyond Jacobitism, towards industrialisation' (2000), a four-volume series published by Edinburgh University Press, and 'The Scots and the Union' (2006). Following Professor Whatley's involvement as co-investigator on the AHRC funded research project, led by Professor Murray Pittock at Glasgow, 'Robert Burns: Inventing Tradition and Securing Memory', he has been writing up some of the vast amount of data collected. This has appeared in articles (2011, 2014, 2017) and chapters (2010, 2016, 2017) and in Immortal Memory: Burns and the Scottish People (2016). Recently, he has begun to experiment with a new kind of history writing - blending autobiography, family biography and the long history of a small island off the island of Skye called Pabay. This has now been published as 'Pabay: An Island Odyssey' (Birlinn, 2019). How to join Joining a seminar is free, and everyone is welcome. No booking is required.
