About the Alan Bruford Memorial Lecture

Inaugurated in 1996, the lecture celebrates the life and work of Dr Alan Bruford (1937-1995), the School of Scottish Studies' longest-serving archivist and an eminent editor, author, collector and scholar of the folktale and storytelling.

It takes place annually as part of the Scottish International Storytelling Festival.

The 2024 lecture

This year, we are delighted to welcome Professor Ronald Black, and Honorary Fellow in Celtic and Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

When events described in Gaelic oral narrative are compared to historical facts, inconsistencies may appear, which could be described as ‘propaganda’. Professor Ronald Black presents two case studies from John Dewar’s book, 'Islay, Jura and Colonsay'. This event is programmed in partnership with the Scottish International Storytelling Festival.

He will give the lecture entitled "Oral Narrative and Propaganda".

About the Scottish International Storytelling Festival 2024

2024 marks the 35th anniversary of the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since 1989, SISF has been building bridges between cultures, artists and audiences all over the world through the power of storytelling – connecting past, present and future.

This year’s theme is ‘Bridges Between’. At a time where literal, figurative and societal walls continue to be constructed, we invite everyone to look beyond these boundaries and to celebrate the last and the next 35 years of storytelling with us.

How to join

The Bruford Lecture is a free but ticketed event, and is open to all.

Tickets must be booked in advance on the Scottish Storytelling Centre website.
