Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Hugh Hagan

In brief

Date - 27 March 2026

Venue - Online

Speaker - Dr Hugh Hagan (Independent Scholar)

Title - A Shipwright Looks at the Archive

About the event

Born in Port Glasgow on the Clyde, Dr Hagan retired recently from a senior post in the National Records of Scotland. But he began his working life as a shipwright in the shipyards of The Port.

He came to the University of Edinburgh as a mature student and studied for an MA (Hons) degree in Scottish Ethnology and Scottish History. He then did a PhD on the lives of women in the shipbuilding communities of the West of Scotland between the two World Wars.

In retirement, Dr Hagan is picking of the threads of his earlier activities in oral history work. In this presentation, he will reflect on the place of the urban and industrial material in the School of Scottish Studies Archive collections in the curation of these aspects of Scottish life.

How to attend

Joining a seminar is free, and everyone is welcome. No booking is required.

All seminars take place online fortnightly on Fridays from 13.00 to 14.00. Please contact Dr Neill Martin to be added to the mailing list for an invitation, link and passcode.
