Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Ben Braber

In brief

Date - 24 October 2025

Venue - Online

Speaker - Dr Ben Braber (University of Glasgow)

Title - Depiction of immigrants in British newspapers between 1841 and 2021

About the event

The focus of the presentation is the depiction of immigrants in Britain between 1841 and 2021, a historical as well as a current issue.  It will show how during this period attitudes to immigrants in this country changed. For this purpose, a selection of British newspapers is used to reveal how feelings about immigrants were put into words, in what context they were articulated and where they came from.

Arguing that negative feelings were often attached as lasting labels to groups of immigrants, the talk provides an illuminating example - the association which newspapers made between immigrants and murder, a link which keeps making newspaper headlines.
