Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Ben Braber In brief Date - 24 October 2025Venue - OnlineSpeaker - Dr Ben Braber (University of Glasgow)Title - Depiction of immigrants in British newspapers between 1841 and 2021 Email Neill Martin for joining details About the eventThe focus of the presentation is the depiction of immigrants in Britain between 1841 and 2021, a historical as well as a current issue. It will show how during this period attitudes to immigrants in this country changed. For this purpose, a selection of British newspapers is used to reveal how feelings about immigrants were put into words, in what context they were articulated and where they came from.Arguing that negative feelings were often attached as lasting labels to groups of immigrants, the talk provides an illuminating example - the association which newspapers made between immigrants and murder, a link which keeps making newspaper headlines.About the speakerBen Braber is a historian and an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Humanities at the University of Glasgow. One of his main areas of interest is the integration of immigrants and their descendants in modern West-European countries.
