Celtic and Scottish Studies Seminar Series: Stuart Eydmann

In brief

Date - 4 October 2024

Venue - Online

Speaker - Dr Stuart Eydmann (University of Edinburgh)

Title - "A great heritage ... dignified, tender, humorous, mournful and full of the love and loyalties and intimacies that lie deep in the national character": Post World War II proposals for Scottish studies in the classroom

About the event

This seminar looks at the 1946 and 1947 Reports of The Sixth Advisory Council On Education In Scotland, particularly their largely forgotten recommendations on the threading of Scottish tradition and culture through all levels of the school curriculum.

This adds to our understanding of how Scotland was primed for initiatives such as the establishment of the School of Scottish Studies and the flowering of the folk music revival. It also informs and challenges aspects of the received wisdom around the narrative of the revival, particularly regarding its engagement with young people and our current expectations of the responsibilities of formal education in this.

How to join

Joining a seminar is free, and everyone is welcome. No booking is required.

All seminars take place online fortnightly on Fridays from 13.00 to 14.00. Please contact Dr Neill Martin to be added to the mailing list for an invitation, link and passcode.
