About the event

Studies focusing on the mental health impacts of climate change awareness on humans have gained momentum since the beginning of the 21st century. In line with this, the topic of eco-awareness has been usually discussed with the term “eco-anxiety”, broadly defined as any significant emotional response to the awareness of climate change.

Though the existing literature provides evidence for the serious mental impacts of the climate crisis on the children, the studies addressing “eco-anxiety” in children’s literature are quite limited. In order to understand the effects of literature in developing eco-awareness and eco-anxiety among children, this seminar aims to approach the topic through the lens of translation. In other words, Dr Harika Karavin Yüce will question whether translations can have a role in shaping eco-awareness and eco-anxiety among children in the target culture.

In addition, this talk will problematise the probable role of translations in turning children’s awareness and/or anxiety into pro-environmental actions. For this purpose, Turkish translations of children books on environment and/or climate change will be used as a case study. Based on pre-determined semantic categories used in the literature for the description of eco-awareness and eco-anxiety, the selected data are examined through the content analysis method.

This seminar will strive to question translation's activist role in environment-related issues. Focusing specifically on the translation of children’s literature, it also aims to provide new interdisciplinary insights for the study of eco-translation.

About the speaker

Dr Harika Karavin Yüce is an assistant professor at Trakya University in the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies. She has been teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses on translation theory, literary translation, specialised translation and interpreting for six years, and has been a certified translator (TR-ENG, ENG-TR) in Turkey for more than ten years.

Dr Karavin Yüce completed her BA and MA degrees at Boğaziçi University in Turkey at the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies, and holds a PhD in Translation Studies from İstanbul University.
