About the speaker

Dr Fedor Benevich received his BA in Byzantine and Mondern Greek Studies from the University of St Peterburg in 2011 and his MA in Islamic Studies from the University of Tübingen in 2013. He completed his PhD in Philosophy at the LMU Munich in 2016. Before joining the University of Edinburgh, he worked at the LMU in the DFG-funded research project “The Heirs of Avicenna: Philosophy in the Islamic East from the 12th to the 13th Century." 

In his research, Fedor focuses on the history of metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind in the Islamic world. He has written on the critical adaptation of ancient philosophical theories in the Arabic intellectual tradition, Islamic philosophical theology (kalām), and post-classical Islamic philosophy. He is also interested in contemporary metaphysics and epistemology.

About the seminar series

Each semester, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IMES) welcomes a fantastic range of guest speakers, PhD students and colleagues from across the University to present a seminar on their research.

This semester, the series focuses on the many different people, disciplines and Schools engaged in research in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Edinburgh, and on their work in progress.
